Two Chairs and a Window

Two Chairs and a Window

A sofa turns a room into a waiting room. Two chairs and a window make a conversation. This note is about distance, unmatched timber, and a short table for how far the seats should sit from the glass.

NORDIC is a sample storefront built with Fatleon. This journal shows how a merchant blog page can look — cover, summary, photographs, and tables. To learn more about Fatleon, visit fatleon.com.

A sofa is a generous object and a blunt one. It faces the room the way a counter faces a queue. Two chairs, turned a few degrees toward a window, do something else: they leave a path, they leave a view, and they ask the sitter to choose a partner. In the sample rooms we prefer that arrangement whenever the wall of glass is the real furniture.

Unmatched on purpose

Matching is how a set is sold. A room is not a set. One seat can be low and woolly, the other upright and timber. The Gothenburg Compact Loveseat will take two people who already know each other; the Natural Linen and Undyed Wood Tea Chair will take the person who arrived with a book. They do not have to share a fabric. They have to share a height of arm, or the conversation will list to one side.

If both chairs shout the same colour, the window has nothing left to do. Let one seat stay quiet — oatmeal, ash, a linen that looks like plaster — and let the other carry the only warm note in the corner. A second warm note is how the arrangement becomes a catalogue spread.

The gap is the third seat

Not a coffee table first

The gap between the chairs is more useful than the table you put in it. A table that fills the gap turns two chairs into a sofa with a hole. Keep the table smaller than either seat, and keep it closer to one chair than to the middle. The person who set the cups down can reach them; the person by the window can still stand up without a ballet.

Two chairs fail when they behave like one sofa. Leave a path a person can walk without turning sideways.

We use a short table in the studio, the same way a merchant might keep sizes on a product page. It is not a rule for every apartment. It is a reminder that the window decides the chairs, and the chairs decide the table — not the other way around.

Stand in the gap. If your hips touch both arms, it is too tight, whatever the numbers say. If you can park a third chair without thinking, it is too wide — you have built a waiting room again.

What the window asks for

Glass wants a back line it can draw. A skirted sofa blurs; a timber frame holds. The FJORD Linen Two-Seat works when you truly need two people on one object, but even then we pull it a half-step off the glass so the sill remains a shelf, not a headrest.

  • One seat that can face the light without squinting
  • One seat that can face the person, not the view
  • A floor that stays empty between them

A conversation that can end

Furniture that cannot be left is furniture that shouts. After the pair is in, we still edit:

  1. Remove the rug if it gathers the two chairs into an island
  2. Keep one timber different from the other
  3. Leave sixty centimetres behind the chair that will be stood up from most often

The point is not to fill the window. It is to sit beside it, twice, without turning the room into a showroom.
