How a Joint Disappears

How a Joint Disappears

A joint you notice twice is doing two jobs, and one of them is usually vanity. Mortise, dowel, visible peg, metal — where they show, when to hide them, and what fails first in a dry room. Sample-room notes, not a joinery textbook.

NORDIC is a sample storefront built with Fatleon. This journal shows how a merchant blog page can look — cover, summary, photographs, and tables. To learn more about Fatleon, visit fatleon.com.

A joint you notice twice is a joint doing two jobs, and one of them is usually vanity. In the sample rooms we ask the joint to hold first, and to vanish second. Vanishing is not the same as lying. A mortise that reads as a quiet shoulder is honest. A metal cap pretending to be timber is not. The difference is whether the room still believes the chair after you have sat down and stood up.

Four ways to hold timber

There is no moral ranking. There is weather, shipping, and how often a chair is dragged. A dining chair that travels in a flat carton will not be built like a chair that never leaves the county. We keep a short table on the bench for that reason — not a specification for every SKU, a reminder of what each method is for.

Mortise is not a moral victory

A mortise is a good joint for a chair that will be stood up from every evening. It is also slower, and it asks the timber to be thick enough to receive it. Thin legs with a deep mortise are how a delicate chair becomes a cracked chair. We do not specify joinery on the product page as a badge. We specify it when the sitter’s weight will find the corner.

Hide a joint when the room is already talking. Show a joint when the chair is the only sentence.

The ATELIER STOL Dining Chair is the test we use for dining: four legs, a lot of standing, no skirt to hide a mistake. If the shoulder of the rail is clean, you stop looking. If it is proud, or stained a shade darker to “read as craft,” you look every time you pass the table.

The dining chair as a test

Dining is unkind. Bags hang on the back. A child stands on the rail. Someone drags the chair instead of lifting it. A joint that only looks well in still photography will speak in that room. The LINNEA Oak Side Chair sits beside a dining chair in our rooms more often than it sits at the table: a side chair can forgive a slightly lighter joint. A dining chair cannot. Do not buy a pair that shares a silhouette and then expect them to share a life.

Birch that stays light

Pale timber shows glue. It also shows metal. The Umeå Birch Side Chair is built to stay light in a north room; a steel connector at the seat would read as a coin on a white cloth. Dowels, well aligned, disappear. A visible peg can work if it is the same birch, not a walnut “accent.” An accent peg is how a quiet chair becomes a souvenir.

  • One joint language per chair, not a sampler
  • Metal only where the chair must come apart
  • Pegs in the same species, or none

What the sample rooms refuse to hide

We hide glue. We hide screws that are only there for assembly. We do not hide a crack that appeared after a dry week with the heating on — that is information, and it belongs on the product page as care, not in filler. The sample rooms are honest about being rooms for photographs. They are not honest if the joint is a theatre of craft.

  1. Sit, stand, drag an inch — listen for rattle
  2. Look at the shoulder in raking light, then stop looking if it is clean
  3. If you can name the joint from the doorway, ask whether the room asked for that

A joint you can leave

The best joint in a house is the one you forget after the first week. That is not the same as cheap. It is the same as finished. Walk past the chair. If your eye catches on a peg, a cap, a dark glue line, the joint has not disappeared. It has taken a second job. In the sample rooms we fire that second job, and we leave the chair to hold.
